Artist Statement

Most of what I paint comes from my mind. I am interested color and texture and I spend a lot of time creating layers in my pieces. I paint mostly in acrylics, but 2025 has seen the introduction of watercolors, ink, charcoal and pastels. I love the outdoors and my work reflects that, seascapes in particular are a constant. The beauty and peace found in nature is what settles me, and I hope my paintings bring that kind of experience to the viewers. My abstract pieces are expressions of emotion and mood where I combine different mediums to create movement, depth and texture, contrasts that remind me of my human condition.

Artistic Process

I paint primarily in acrylics and use lots of layers to create interest in my pieces. Recently I have started to mix acrylics with watercolors or pen and ink - maybe a pastel or charcoal. I like to experiment with different mediums creating texture, depth and movement. I use paint brushes, palette knives, fingers, paper, catalyst blades, water, all kinds of different bits to move the paint around. I always have several pieces going at once... I find I work better that way. When I hit a sticking point with one, I move onto another. This keeps me from becoming overly blocked or rigid. Sometimes it saves me from over working a piece or completely painting over something in frustration! I have found that there are some pieces that paint themselves in one or two long sittings. Other paintings sit for weeks or months, and take time to resolve into something I am satisfied with.

I paint on paper and canvas mostly. The last several months, I have taken to ripping up some of my smaller pieces and turning them into collages. A real exercise in detachment. I have learned that the way I do my art is a lot like the way I do my life and it turns out to be a little messy, surprising and always changing. There are so many lessons to be learned about perfectionism, tuning in, the unknown, trusting, being enough, believing in oneself, letting go. Grateful for the practice.
