Henry J. Drexler - painter
Artist Statement
Raised on a dairy farm in upstate New York, I have always had an affinity for the rural landscape. Inspired by the seasonal cycles, textures, rhythms and patterns of color and light, I strive to imbue my work with feeling and sense of place.
Each painting is an experiment that creates new challenges to be resolved. I paint with acrylic using various techniques to resolve these challenges. I usually carry a camera when walking and travelling about to capture images that motivate me. Back in my studio I use these images for reference and inspiration. Photography, however, is just a part of my creative process and not an end in and of itself. Before picking up a brush, I visualize what I want to paint and how I intend to execute that vision. Then, as I paint, the process takes over and I let it take me where it will, sometimes toward realism and other times toward abstraction. My later work is trending toward increased visual ambiguity with multiple views of reality and options for interpretation.
