David Eichorn - woodworker
Artist Statement
I have never considered myself much of an artist, but I find that if I just sit back sometimes, and stare at some of the hundreds of board feet of beautiful, precious lumber in my shop, ideas will happen. Whole projects have come from inspiration initiated from admiring one piece of lumber. I generally work with rough-sawn domestic and rare, exotic wood. I use no stain. The color and figure in the wood is entirely natural. Put simply, the wood is my art. I often accent it with inlay and just try and make it functional.
Artistic Process
I usually start with a concept, or an idea inspired by my sizable collection of domestic and rare exotic woods. I mill the wood true and square for proper mortise and tenon joinery. With live edge burls, the rough edges are somewhat smoothed for functionality. My inlay work is inspired by the wood itself. I look for curves in the natural wood figure and guide inlay from that. A finish is applied to the project and when cured the piece is ready.
